Egg Criminal Activity

Egg prices have increased 70% over the past year and this has caused an increase in criminal activity.

Recent data from Boarder and Customs shows that there is a 100% increase in smuggling of eggs. Prices at boarder communities (Canada and Mexico) are 50% cheaper. Economics forces means that there is room for profits for smugglers, as long as they are willing to cross the boarder.

A more important question is why are prices in the US that much higher? The argument so far has been about Avian Flu but shouldn’t that impact Mexican and Canadian eggs too? Or is it a story about market power?
