S&P 500 Down 19.1% in 2022

The S&P 500 ended 2022 down 19.1%. This is the worst finish for the index since 2008.

Below are two graphs, the first shows the average weekly (ending Friday) returns since the beginning of the year. The graph clearly shows the weekly volatility across years and highlights 2022’s path to 19.1% loss.

The second graph shows end of year returns for each of the years. This makes it easier to compare the final return across years. The 29.32% in 2019 and the -19.1% in 2022 can be compared more easily.
