What are your core values?

Core values are a set of ideals or beliefs that guide corporations as they navigate decisions. Individuals can also create a list of core values that help guide them through the complexity of personal and professional decisions. There are no fast rules on how many core values to have, it is up to you.

Lately, I have had several situations that I, or my students, have gone through that required us to discuss what core values we want to lead with. The reality is life moves fast, and decisions have to be made quickly and sometimes in a charged emotional setting. Core values will help make some decisions clearer, some easier, and when it isn’t clear or easy, it will help you sleep better knowing there is a reason behind your actions.

It is going to rain

Some might marginalize the importance of defining your core values. When times are good and everything is fine, they seem unnecessary. But when it gets tough, your core values will help guide you. It is no secret that I am preparing for more turbulent economic times in the next 12-18 months. My core values are front and center, helping guide my professional, personal, and financial decisions. When it rains, I will be ready.

To identify your core values consider the answer to these questions:

  1. How do you want people to feel after working with you?

  2. What kind of culture do you want to work in?

  3. What environment, settings, or resources are necessary for you to do your best work?

  4. What qualities do you feel create strong, healthy relationships?

  5. What qualities do you admire most in your role models?

  6. What motivates you?

  7. What qualities do you wish to develop in yourself professionally and personally?

  8. What are your future goals? What qualities will it take to achieve them?
