Do you live in an owner-occupied home?

Data Source

The Data was collected from the American Community Survey and is based on the question below.

Is this house, apartment, or mobile home -- Mark (X) ONE box.

a. Owned by you or someone in this household with a mortgage or loan? Include home equity loans.

b. Owned by you or someone in this household free and clear (without a mortgage or loan)?

c. Rented?

d. Occupied without payment of rent? -> Skip to C

I coded answers a and b as living in an owner-occupied home then found the average by age of the household member.

Data Story

Turns out that 69% of those living in the United States live in an owner-occupied resident. This ratio changes by age. In the below graph I plot the fraction of people living in an owner-occupied home across the age distribution.

The ratio of those living in an owner-occupied home increases between ages of 1 through 18. At 18, we see a large drop as young adults move out of their childhood homes and become renters early in their independent lives. The ratio then continues to increase, reaching its peak at 84% for 71 year olds. I expect that decrease after the age of 71 is a shift to living in nursing homes.

Class Story

The Haile Econ Fellows have spent their summer working with the ACS. Their focus has been on self-employment in the United States. We are currently working on how to best tell a story with the data and their findings.

In the spring, I teach a class called Data Tools and Visualization for Business. In that class we learn about

  1. Public datasets and how to access them.

  2. Coding, cleaning, and managing data.

  3. Analyzing data.

  4. Creating data visualizations.

  5. Storytelling with data.
